Measurements on Ionic Mobilities in Liquid 4He

  • Chapter
Low Temperature Physics-LT 13

Abstract

We have measured ionic mobilities in liquid helium in the temperature range 1.25–4.24°K. The method used1 is based on the measurement of the pressure generated by ions moving in an electric field. We melted two electrodes, one flat and one pin-shaped, in a glass tube which is open on both ends. Creation of ions takes place in the neighborhood of and at the very sharp tungsten electrode under the influence of a potential difference of 6–30 kV. We measured the pressure generated inside the glass tube as a level difference Δh between the liquid helium levels inside and outside the tube.
