An Experimental Test of Vinen’s Dimensional Theory of Turbulent He II

Abstract

In a previous work,1 using submerged thermionic filaments, we measured the escape probability P of negative ions trapped on vorticity in turbulent He II and demonstrated that the vorticity is identical to that in rotating helium except for spatial configuration of the lines. Above 1.75°K the results are in agreement with observations on rotating superfluid and with Donnelly’s escape theory.2 Below this temperature anomalously large values of P were measured. In order to further investigate this effect and to observe the pressure dependence of P, we have studied the space-charge-limited diode current from an 8-Ci tritium ion source.3
