Abstract
Ever since the realization in the late 1930’s that the macroscopic dynamics of liquid helium for T < T λ (~ 2.2°K) was quite different from those of ordinary fluids, physicists, led initially by F. London, have been trying to understand its unusual macroscopic behavior from the point of view of the quantum theory. Surely the main reason for interest in He II is that its macroscopic behavior or hydrodynamics is a direct consequence of the operation of quantum mechanics on a massive scale. In this paper we will discuss those aspects of the macroscopic behavior of He II that are most closely related to the quantum theory.
