Abstract
It is well-documented that arterial stiffness increases with age (Roy, 1880; Hallock and Benson, 1937; Hass, 1942; Butcher and Newton, 1958; Roach and Burton, 1959; Learoyd and Taylor, 1966; Bader, 1967; Nakashima and Tanikawa, 1971; Mozersky et al., 1973; Gozna et al., 1974; Mirsky and Janz, 1976; Cox, 1977; Newman and Lallemand, 1978; Langewouters, 1982; Yin, Spurgeon and Kallman, 1983). Richter and Mittermayer (1984) reported that the volume of the postmortem human aorta is 35 ml at age 20 years, while at 70 years the volume increases to an average of 111 ml. With age the vessel becomes dilated and stiffens (Learoyd and Taylor, 1966; Nichols et al., 1985). There seems to be little doubt that arteriosclerosis, a frequent complicating aspect of the aging process in modern life, results in severe stiffening of the thoracic aorta, as well as other, more peripheral, vessels. The role that atherosclerosis plays in arterial stiffening has not been well defined.
