Abstract

Important qualities of good immunoassays include high specificity, sensitivity, accuracy and simplicity in performance. These criteria are only met to a limited extent by the traditional immunological methods registering e.g. precipitation, agglutination or complement fixation. Therefore, in recent years these methods have gradually been replaced by various “primary binding” assays. These methods often use insolubilized antigen (or antibody) as a means to enable effective separation of bound and unbound reagents and a radioisotope- or enzyme-label for the detection step.
