The Thrombotic Process in Atherogenesis

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 104))

Abstract

Atherogenesis is characterized in part by excessive proliferation of arterial intimal smooth muscle cells (SMC). Arterial SMC proliferation can be produced by acute or chronic intimal trauma in normo-lipidemic (NL) animals, especially if the endothelial cells (EC) are denuded as with a balloon catheter. Also, intimal SMC proliferation can be produced by making animals hyperlipidemic (HL) by dietary manipulation without trauma to the EC.
