Abstract
It should be stressed at the outset that this presentation will mainly point out the deficiencies in our knowledge rather than present any substantial body of scientifically significant data. There is a dearth of information on specific therapeutic efficacy of anti-anxiety agents in the geriatric population, In aspects of differential side effects, on potential differences in metabolic handling, and on drug interaction problems that may arise when anti-anxiety agents are given concurrently with drugs employed for medical management. In determining the therapeutic efficacy of these drugs we must consider such problems as a potentially high placebo response rate and the choice of psychological rating scales which are relevant and sensitive to an elderly population. Salzman and Shader have outlined the difficulties encountered by investigators in this area. We will discuss these problems in terms of each of the following categories: a) population, b) diagnosis, and c) chemotherapeutic agents.
