Abstract
Early studies of calcium transport emphasized the striking similarity between the renal handling of calcium and of sodium (1) and pioneering micropuncture studies suggested that calcium transport occurred throughout the nephron paralleling sodium (2,3). More recently, sophisticated studies by a number of investigators have allowed us to begin to dissect out various segments of the nephron in an attempt to define the site of action of the factors which regulate the urinary excretion of calcium. These studies have allowed the development of a concept of calcium transport which emphasizes the importance of the distal portions of the nephron in the determination of calcium excretion. In this review, I will discuss transport in the various segments of the nephron but because of time limitations, I will be able to emphasize only some of the recently studied important issues.
