Improved Biomaterials for Artificial Lung Membranes

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Polymer Science and Technology ((POLS,volume 8))

Abstract

The membrane lung is a prosthetic device presently used in an extracorporeal blood circuit to partially exchange respiratory gases when the function of the natural lung is severely compromised, or for total gas exchange during cardiac surgery. When used for respiratory insufficiency, the membrane lung avoids the complications of conventional ventilator therapy which arise from high airway pressures and inspired oxygen concentrations. By preventing both hypoxia and hypercapnea, the membrane lung can maintain life while otherwise fatal pulmonary damage receives therapy and heals [1, 2].
