Abstract
MODCON is a system developed in the late 1970s mainly for the computer-aided manufacture (CAM) (rather than design) of dies for the hot forging industry (Chan and Knight, 1979, 1980; Chan et al., 1979; Mullineux and Knight, 1980). Its name is a shortened form of MODular CONstruction; the basic concept is the building up of component shapes out of simpler volumetric forms or primitives. These primitive shapes include such entities as (truncated) cones and rectangular blocks. The general forms of these are predetermined but they possess parameters which the user can define to create the types of shape that are required.
