Abstract

True glucagon, i.e., the 3485 mol. wt. biologically active immunoreactive polypeptide present in pancreas, appears to have the same amino acid sequence in all the mammalian species thus far studied—pork (Bromer (et al., 1957), beef (Bromer et al., 1971), man (Thomsen et al., 1972), rat (Sundby and Markussen, 1971), and rabbit (Sundby and Markussen, 1972)—suggesting the possible importance of these primary structural features. The primary sequences of avian glucagons differ (Markussen et al., 1972; Sundby et al., 1972; Pollock and Kimmel, 1975), and these differences appear to influence their immunological properties (Markus-sen et al., 1972).
