Abstract
In a way it is pointless to speculate too much on what is likely to develop from the two main initiatives which this book has been concerned with. So much, after all, of MAP’s future depends on the success of Western manufacturing industry, and that is a study in itself. TOP, though off to a slow start, may turn out to be the answer to a lot of the communications problems in off-the-floor trading in the world’s financial markets, for example. The provision of standard, plug-in communications based on open systems could transform the prospects for cashless shopping in high streets in all but the smallest towns.
