Abstract

Superconductivity has been observed in Pd foils implanted with Cu at room temperature and subsequently charged electrolytically with H at dry ice temperature. Superconducting transition temperatures, Tc, with onsets as high as 16.6 K have been observed. Hydrogen concentration profiles have been measured to a depth of ~0.2 μm for similar samples at 77 K using the 6.4 MeV resonance of the nuclear reaction 15N(1H,αγ.)12C. A step-wise warmup procedure between 77 K and 273 K produces considerable variations both in the superconducting transition curves and in the H depth profiles. The observed concentration changes evolve from an initial ratio H/Pd~3 and show a strong positive correlation with Tc.
