Regulation of Neuronal Adenylate Cyclase

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 221))

Abstract

Receptors for a panoply of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators are known to couple to the adenylate cyclase system. In the past few years we have benefitted from an explosion of information concerning the molecular identification of the adenylate cyclase components, and this information has served both to elucidate possible mechanisms for the coupling of adenylate cyclase to receptors as well as the activation cascade of that enzyme. This information has also served to illustrate the extraordinary complexity of the system. Several recent reviews (cf. Birnbaumer et al., 1985; Gilman, 1984) have addresssed the structure and function of adenylate cyclase. The purpose of this manuscript is not to overlap with those, but rather, to illustrate some of the unusual features of adenylate cyclase from neural systems.
