Biochemical Changes in the Artery Wall during Genesis and Regression of Atheromatous Lesions

Abstract

It is generally accepted that the formation of atheromatous lesions represents an interaction between plasma lipids (lipoproteins) and the arterial wall. In most species, including man, qualitative or quantitative changes in plasma lipids result in an accelerated rate of development of atherosclerosis. A growing body of evidence, however, also suggests that the arterial wall itself plays more than a passive role in this process.
