Effects of Drugs on the Metabolism of Bile Acids

  • Chapter
Pharmacological Control of Lipid Metabolism

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 26))

Abstract

Bile acids are the main end products of the breakdown of cholesterol and their metabolism is intimately linked with that of cholesterol. Hence, the study of the effects of drugs on bile acid metabolism, apart from its intrinsic interest, is relevant to the problem of hypercholesterolaemia. Drugs that modify bile acid metabolism may also be used to produce experimental situations that provide information as to how sterol. metabolism is regulated. In this review I shall describe briefly those steps in the synthesis and subsequent fate of bile acids that are likely to be susceptible to the actions of drugs and I shall then discuss the effects of various agents, including hormones and certain dietary factors, that are known to influence bile acid metabolism.
