Abstract

Most engineering assemblies rely on an interchangeability of component parts, achieved by placing tolerances on individual dimensions. When the designer selects tolerances he does so by choosing from BS4500 for the class of fit he requires (clearance, transitional or interference) and selects the grade based on the functional requirements of the component and precision of manufacture envisaged. In doing this, he argues that the parts must fit together satisfactorily even when the dimensions are at their most unfavourable extremes.
