Abstract

Recently it has become clear that the orbital momentum is not completely quenched in the High Tc superconductors. In this paper we focus on the role of orbital degrees of freedom in Mott-Hubbard insulators. We first rederive the molecular field (Kugel- Khomskii) picture for d 9 systems and we present new results on the excitation spectra. We show that this classical picture is incomplete: low lying orbital excitations give rise to a strong enhancement of the quantum spin fluctuations. Further, we comment on Weber’s suggestion that observed phonon-anomalies might be due to Jahn-Teller physics.
