Abstract

The interaction of time-dependence and spatial patterns can lead to a rich variety of interesting phenomena. In the particular case of Rayleigh-Benard convection in a cylindrical container, axisymmetric travelling waves have been predicted from theories of wavelength selection (Pomeau and Manneville, 1981), but have eluded experimental observation. Here we describe observations of such travelling waves in numerical simulations of the full Boussinesq equations, using a time-dependent code which has additional capabilities for linear stability analysis and steady-state continuation (Tuckerman 1989).
