Studies of the High Pressure Transition in Sulfur

  • Chapter
High-Pressure Science and Technology

Abstract

The metallic nature of the elements in Group VI A increases with atomic weight. Oxygen and sulfur are insulators, selenium is a high resistance semiconductor, tellurium is a low-resistance semiconductor or what is often called a semimetal, and polonium is a metal. One of the most interesting high-pressure characteristics of Group VI A elements is that each approaches the metallic State under extreme pressure conditions (except oxygen which has not been studied yet). The results of the studies of high-pressure transition in crystalline orthorhombic sulfur are presented here.
