Abstract

Fifty years takes us back to 1937. I had just graduated from the City College of New York, where I received the Ward Medal of Physics, and I was engaged to Sylvia Harris. We subsequently married in 1940. I also had a job, which was remarkable. It was still the middle of the depression and very few CCNY 1937 graduates were employed. I was to teach at the City College for one year with a salary of $1,600, sixteen contact hours was the standard load at that time for everyone. With this salary and the money I earned teaching summer school, I was able to go to graduate school in the fall of 1938. I went to M.I.T.
