The Origin and Development of Neutrophils

  • Chapter
The Neutrophil

Abstract

The information under this general heading is of three rather disconnected kinds. First, there is the classic morphological work, which traces the origin of blood neutrophils from myeloblasts in bone marrow, and physiological evidence about functional differences between mature and immature cells. Second, there is evidence about the kinetics of neutrophil production and utilization during normal and pathological states, which has been derived mostly from radioactively labeled populations of cells. Third, there are the attempts to find a more fundamental cellular origin for the neutrophil and other blood cells. We will take them up in this order.
