Abstract
The relative amounts of some of the cytochrome P-450 enzymes are known to be selectively increased by chemicals (Conney, 1982, Whit lock, 1986). Especially interesting is the induction of certain forms of cytochrome P-450 by 5,6-benzof lavone (BNF), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as 3-methylcholanthrene, and chloroaromatics like 2, 3, 7, 8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), since this induction profoundly influences the metabolism of PAH to ultimate carcinogens that are able to form specific adducts with DNA (Conney, 1982). TCDD is the most potent inducer of these particular forms of cytochrome P-450 (c. f. Poland and Knutson, 1982).
