Abstract

In general, specific genes are expressed in a temporal or tissuespecific manner or are regulated in response to extracellular signals (Mitchell and Tjian, 1989). Steroid hormones constitute one such group of extracellular signals that regulate the expression of certain genes by interacting with intracellular receptor proteins. These receptors belong to a family of ligand-activated enhancer-binding proteins i.e. the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor super-family, that also includes receptors for retinoic acid, thyroid hormone and some yet unidentified ligands (Evans, 1988).
