Abstract
The temporal responses of two types of excitonic optical non-linearity in multiple quantum well structures are discussed. Picosecond transient grating measurements provide coefficients of nonlinear refraction associated with exciton saturation in room temperature GaAs/AlGaAs structures as well as information on carrier heating and carrier transport, both intra-well and cross-well. The wavelength shift of the exciton feature when carriers are optically generated in an electrically biased GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well structure has allowed an assessment of the nature of the cross-well photocurrent using the picosecond excite-probe method.4
