Influence of Bicarbonate on the Renal Handling of Magnesium

Abstract

Metabolic acidosis has been shown to increase the urinary excretion of calcium, but the effects of acidosis on renal magnesium excretion are variable. Increases in urinary magnesium have been demonstrated in some1,3 but not all studies of experimental metabolic acidosis in humans4,5. The reason for these contrasting results is not apparent. On the other hand, acute administration of acid in experimental animals failed to increase urinary magnesium6.
