Abstract

Many theoretical and practical problems are encountered in designing methods to calculate turnover rates of neuronal catecholamines and serotonin “in vivo.” The great majority of these difficulties derives from our incomplete understanding of the morphology and biochemistry of monoaminergic nerves. Frequently we circumvent the barriers of our ignorance by over simplifications leading to the formulation of kinetic models. Not only are these models unsatisfactory because of the implicit assumptions but as listed in Table 1, other limitations impair the in vivo measurements of turnover rates of brain monoamines in animals. Of course, the difficulties become insurmountable if we try to measure turnover rates of brain monoamines in man.
