Abstract
In this paper a numerical classification of Mesozoic volcanic rocks in eastern China has been approached by multivariate methods and its geologic significance is discussed. Because of complexity of geologic conditions, representative regions, and typical rock specimens are selected based on petrological and geomathematical research. For the purpose of numerical classification the factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and nonlinear mapping are utilized. The obtained results verify the rationality of division of these volcanic rocks into groups from their rock-type characteristics, and present much useful information which may be utilized for theoretical and practical purposes.
