Abstract
The acute onset of a neurological problem, such as coma or seizures, is dramatic when it occurs and demands immediate evaluation and emergency treatment. In this context, it is easy to overlook the possibility that the nervous system abnormality does not represent a primary neurological disorder but is secondary to systemic disease or failure of one or more organ systems. Ascertainment of an underlying condition obviously has important implications for treatment.
