Abstract

The book of which this paper will be a part began as an address prepared for the annual general meeting of the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia, April 21, 1973, entitled “The place of understanding.” The chairman ofthat meeting was Francis O. Schmitt. The address was elaborated for the Hans Berger Centennial Symposium on Brain-Mind Relationships, held at the Montreal Neurological Institute, May 23, 1973.
