Abstract
Surely Francis O. Schmitt cannot be seventy years old—his wisdom and perception require at least twice that many years while his actions and acuity are unequaled by men half that age. I consider it a great privilege to act as one of the representatives of the NRP Associates in this symposium honoring our chairman. Since my admission ticket to stroll along the paths of discovery in the neurosciences depended upon the relationship between my age and that of the other Associates, I feel quite unqualified to attempt to provide any historical perspectives on the development of the NRP and will leave that task to others. Even if the myopia of youth and inexperience blurs my personal views, I nevertheless feel competent to express my own esteem for Professor Schmitt based upon the inspiration and perception I have received from him and the NRP.
