Abstract

X hours later, where X is an unknown number between 10 and 34, I woke up. I was disoriented. It was dark. The smells and sounds were strange. I looked at my wrist watch I’d taken off and put on the floor. It was no good to me; it was telling Perth time; besides, it had stopped. I found a switch and turned it on. I made my way down a dark hall and found the Princess Royal plumbing. I came back and took a cold water shave. I was shivering. I dressed, putting on two undershirts. I sat in bed in my clothes under the blankets. I tried to go back to sleep, but it wouldn’t work. I got up and studied a map of the Old City that I had picked up at the airport. The problem was I didn’t know where the hotel was located. The sky was beginning to lighten. I could hear someone downstairs moving about. I could smell coffee and something frying. I put on my coat and ran out of the George IV.
