Abstract

Shortly after Sam graduated from college, I ran into him on t e streets of Providence. I asked him what he was doing and he told me that he was housepainting to earn money. I asked him whether he had any plans for the future and he answered that he had many irons in the fire. He was giving talks on Sikkimese Culture to Rhode Island school children, he was translating Nineteenth century Lamaistic philosophy into English, he was helping to build a Lamaist Temple, he was getting married, he was thinking of setting up an import business, he was trying to sell mandalas, he was also seriously thinking of going into retreat for a nine month period.
