Abstract

If you were to ask anyone today if they could think of an aphrodisiac, they would be almost certain to suggest rhinoceros horn or even Spanish flies as examples. A medievalist or other historian might also manage to recall the magic mandrake, whereas a member of the contemporary Californian drug scene would certainly be able to suggest Mandrax, a widely available drug once used as a sleeping pill and coincidentally named by the manufacturers to suggest the classic drug. On the other hand, very few people are likely ever to have used rhino horn, Spanish flies or mandrake for aphrodisiac purposes, although they might well have casually noticed the disinhibiting effects of alcohol on social and sexual behaviour.
