Abstract
Demography deals with two different, but related, aspects of an animal’s biology. Lifehistory processes are concerned with the rates at which animals give birth, die and migrate; demographic structure is concerned with the composition of a population in terms of various age and sex classes and the way that the animals are distributed among social groups. Lifehistory processes are the more fundamental of the two because it is rates of birth, death and migration that are largely responsible for determining the actual composition and size of social groups.
