Abstract
Many peripheral devices can be connected to the i386/i486 machine. The communications between these devices and the i386/i486 are through I/O addresses. The I/O address can carry data, present the status of the peripheral devices, or control the peripheral devices. This chapter discusses the I/O addresses (I/O port address and memory I/O address) and the I/O port protection mechanism (I/O privilege level protection and I/O permission bit map protection) provided by the i386/i486 processor.
