Abstract
The previous chapters mentioned that there are three different i386/i486 operation modes (real-address, protected, and v86 mode). This chapter describes how to enter and leave the protected mode. Before entering the protected mode, you have to set up the system data structures (GDT and IDT) and initialize system registers (GDTR and IDTR) in the program. When leaving the protected mode, you also have to reset the system registers (segment registers) to prepare the execution environment for the real-address mode.
