Abstract

A quasi-harmonic 4 months fluctuation of the Earth rotation (UT1) has been recognized by several authors since 1963: although its amplitude is at least as large as the 50-day one, it has been practically ignored.

Analyzing more precise data acquired since 1976 we do not only confirm the existence of this particular fluctuation of UT1, but we also identified the same oscillation in the Atmospheric Angular Momentum and in solar activity parameters such as Sunspot Areas, Solar Wind, Interplanetary Magnetic Field. The existence of this particular component both in solar and geophysical phenomena, associated with other analysis establishing the excitation of the troposphere by the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, conducts to the conclusion that its origin lies in physical processes in the Sun (Djurovic et al., 1989).

The causal relationship between solar activity and geophysical phenomena has already been pointed out in a research about the origin of the 50-day fluctuation (Djurovic et al., 1988). Details on data sets, methods, results and conclusions are given in the Djurovic et al., (1988, 1989).
