Abstract
Urea is one of the products of the life activity of animals. It is used in agriculture as an excellent concentrated fertilizer. Practically all plants tolerate the use of comparatively large dosages of this compound without any harm. But even the simplest derivative of urea, biuret, has appreciable phytocidal effect and at dosages of 40–70 kg./ha. it inhibits the growth of many monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants. It is suitable for the control of weeds in crops of cotton, corn, and others. In spite of the large dosages, biuret may have practical importance, since in the soil it undergoes hydrolysis with the formation of ammonia, which is utilized by crop plants as a source of nourishment.
