Mechanical and Biochemical Events During Hypoxia-Induced Relaxations of Rabbit Aorta

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 304))

Abstract

Tissue hypoxia is involved both in chronic pathophysiological changes such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal ischemia and in acute physiological or environmental changes such as exposure to high altitudes. A current challenge in medicine and physiology is to better understand how cellular functions can be preserved during hypoxic events. One of the primary and initial aspects of cellular function affected by hypoxia is energy production and delivery. Energy delivery in cells is dependent on a variety of factors including the rates and sites of energy production, the transport of high energy compounds, and the local environment around energy-consuming reactions.
