Abstract
Group A streptococci are widespread human pathogens which are responsible for nasopharyngeal infections and impetigo. There are over 25 million cases of group A streptococcal infections each year in the United States alone, at a cost of over $1 billion to the public. Despite the fact that streptococcal infection can be successfully treated with antibiotics, in the interim it often causes significant discomfort and loss in productivity. Furthermore, about 3% of infected individuals afflicted with streptococcal infection develop a more serious illness such as rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. Because rheumatic heart disease occurs in as many as 1% of school-age children in developing countries (Agarwal, 1981; Dodu and Bothig, 1989), there is a strong impetus to develop a safe and effective vaccine against group A streptococcal pharyngitis.
