Abstract

Numerous examples of blue light responses are known for plants, fungi and microorganisms. In the context of photomovements, the main topic of this Advanced Study Institute, we can mention phototropism, growth responses, phototaxis and chloroplast movement as well known phenomena. From several typical blue light responses action spectra are available. However, due to the intrinsic limitations, this technique has not been successful in unambiguously identifying the nature of the photoreceptor involved (see for example Briggs and Iino, 1983). As suggested in this paper, flavins are favored as most likely photoreceptors involved in typical UVA/blue light responses. As became clear in the course of this workshop, at least two other chromophores, pterins and rhodopsins, could possibly be involved in certain blue light phenomena, eventually in concert with a flavin.
