Abstract

To produce liver abscesses, virulent Entamoeba histolytica have to cope with several problems: colonization of the gut, adherence to colonic epithelium, destruction of epithelial layer, adherence to and lysis of host inflammatory cells, and resistence to immune defence mechanisms. E. histolytica trophozoites obtained from symptomatic patients (designated as pathogenic) have been found to differ from those isolated from asymptomatic carriers (nonpathogenic) by a number of biochemical criteria such as isoenzyme electromigration, interaction with monoclonal antibodies or hybridization with DNA probes (Bracha et al. 1990). The reason for the difference in the pathogenic behaviour of the two classes of ameba is, however, not well understood, partly because only few studies were performed with nonpathogenic strains which cannot be grown in axenic cultures.
