Abstract

Although enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is the most common cause of diarrhea in developing countries and in travelers to these areas, there is no ETEC vaccine available for use in humans. In developing countries ETEC diarrhea is mainly seen in children below 5 years and it has been estimated that as many as 650 million cases occur annually among these children, resulting in approximately 800.000 deaths [1]. ETEC is also the cause of 30–50% of all diarrheas in travelers to Latin America, Africa and Asia [1, 2, 3], i.e. between 2 and 3 million cases each year.
