Abstract

Several pieces of evidence exist which suggest that the volatile anesthetics exert their negative inotropic effect by interfering with the calcium homeostasis of the myocardial cell.1 Our laboratory has examined three important sites in the myocardial cell that are known to be involved with the phasic changes in intracellular calcium which occur during contraction. These sites are the sarcolemma, the sarcoplasmic reticulum, and the myofibrils. This paper is directed towards our investigations of one constituent of the sarcolemma, the voltage-dependent calcium channel (VDCC), and its probable alteration by the volatile anesthetic, halothane.
