Transfer and Metabolism of Thyroid-Related Substances in the Placenta

  • Chapter
Advances in Perinatal Thyroidology

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 299))

Abstract

The primary role of the placenta is to transfer substances between the mother and fetus. Another function is to metabolize fetal substrates, perhaps including thyroid hormones. This paper will outline general aspects of placental transfer (PT), discuss methods that have been used to evaluate “thyroid-related” substances (TRSs), and review the current information regarding their PT.
