Abstract

Postnatal thyroid function in the preterm infant is dependent on the neonate’s gestational maturity, intrauterine growth and birth weight, and state of health. In general, in larger premature infants the pattern of pituitary-thyroid function is qualitatively similar but quantitatively less than that in the term infant, whereas in the smaller (<1,000 g, <30 weeks) preterm infant there is delay in activation of pituitary-thyroid function (1, 2).
