Abstract

The extreme rigidity of the diamond lattice is the key to many of its exceptional properties. This review first discusses the main physical properties of diamond including its structure, stability, the impurities diamonds contain and their effect on its thermal, optical and electrical behaviour. With this as background, recent results and data are then presented on the elastic, cleavage, strength, fracture, hardness, frictional and wear properties of diamond.
