Abstract

The use of ion beam methods for determining the adsorbate coverage of single crystal surfaces can lead to absolute values with uncertainties less than 0.05 ML (1 ML = 1 monolayer ≃ 1015 atoms cm-2) in favourable cases. This accuracy arises from the availability of reliable nuclear reaction cross section data for light ions incident at MeV energies on low atomic number atoms, specifically H(D), C and O isotopes. Examples of such coverage measurements are given for CO/Pt(lll) at 185K assayed separately for C and O, O2/Ni(100) at 300K determined for both chemisorbed O16 and O18, and C2D4/Pt(lll) at 100K determined through measurements of both C and D.
