Abstract
Heterogeneous catalysis finds very widespread application and is of profound academic interest as well as major industrial importance. This brief chapter provides an introduction to some of the concepts of interest in contemporary catalysis, while it is left to individual presentations to introduce the wide range of techniques under consideration.
